About
I am a Northern California native in my late twenties, currently living a stones throw away from the San Fransisco Bay and very happy to be here.
I’m an avid reader and writer. My primary addiction of choice is fantasy — from the Urban fantasy workings of Charles DeLint, to Tolkien-inspired High fantasy, to Dark fantasy such as Lois McMaster Bujold’s “Curse of Chalion” series, to the many Young Adult novels of Diana Wynne Jones. I also enjoy a variety of SciFi, however I tend to prefer classic SciFi, with it’s explorations on what it means to be human in an ever expanding universe full of alien life and fantastical and improbable predictions of future technology, over much contemporary SciFi which often feels, to me, to be too focused on flashy tech and even flashier space battles.
Of course, I’m also not above cracking open the occasional Mystery novel or Horror/Supernatural novel. I do like romance as well, though Romance novels themselves rarely interest me. In the realm of non-fiction, I turn most of my attention to studies on gender, sexuality, religion (especially on how it relates to the previous two), animal behavior, ancient cultures, and modern society.
Many of the TV shows and movies I enjoy reflect my tastes in books. I am, though, especially drawn to cartoons and animation, as well as comic books and Japanese managa. My interests in that area usually range from the dark and complex, to the light-hearted and humorous. I’ll admit that when it comes to comic books, I’m mostly just looking to be entertained and my standards for that are much different than in other forms of media.
What draws me to any story in any format is the human element in it. The growth and development of the characters; the interactions between them and how it changes due to personal growth and outside influences; the conflicts between the values of self and the mores of society; the personal battles of good vs. evil and all the shades of gray that lie between them.
